Graphic designer fought
disability for normal life

Two years ago, despite being disabled, Michael J. “Mikki” Lawson was determined to beat Lou Gehrig’s disease.

“However, I remain confident at overcoming this neuromuscular killer and leading a near as ‘normal’ life soon,” Lawson said on a Web page on the Internet about the battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Lawson, 48, of Waikiki, a graphic designer for the Hawaii Newspaper Agency, died Sunday at home.

Born in London, Lawson is survived by mother Ellen N. and brother Robert. Memorial gathering: 5 p.m. next Friday in front of the Kapionlani Park bandstand. Casual attire. No flowers.

Marilyn Y.K.P. Ching,77, of Honolulu, a social worker for the YWCA and state Department of Social Services and Housing, died Wednesday in Straub Hospital. Marion S.T. Field,92, of Kalae, Maui, a registered nurse for Molokai General Hospital, died Monday in Straub Hospital.
