Keliihoomalu, greeted kings,
was union man

By Mary Adamski
Star-Bulletin

Moody Keliihoomalu’s job as protocol officer with the state government put him at the front line of greeting kings, prime ministers and presidents when they arrived in Hawaii.

When he retired in 1987 he had served 30 years in state jobs that also included election administrator and visitor information specialist with the Department of Transportation.

“He loved his job, and his second love was the Special Forces,” said Alfred Fernandez of Aiea, a friend who shared years of experiences in the Army Reserve.

They were with the Hawaii Reserve Special Forces unit that trained as a backup for the Army’s Green Berets during the Vietnam War.

Keliihoomalu died Tuesday in Castle Hospital.

Fernandez said his friend joined the U.S. Army in 1945 and served as an interpreter in interrogation of German prisoners. He left the Army in 1956, and continued in the Reserve until he retired as a master sergeant 1978.

“Moody almost died in Okinawa, where we were taking parachute training,” he recalled. “The colonel had everyone in the barracks kneel and say a prayer for Moody” who had collapsed while running

in hot and humid weather. “He was a very resilient man. He completed parachute training the next year and eventually qualified as a senior paratrooper with 75 jumps.”

Fernandez said: “Although he was proud of being a Green Beret, he was a peaceful man. He was a loving family man. He never said anything bad about anyone. He loved his wife and children, and was just getting to love his four little grandchildren.”

David Trask, former executive director of the Hawaii Government Employees Association, said: “I think he contributed to the building of the union. He did his part.”

Keliihoomalu was Oahu chapter president and state president of the union in the days before it was separated into units representing diverse groups of government workers.

He was active in several organizations including the Democratic Party, St. Louis High School Parent Teachers Group, Olomana Community Association, Kailua Elks Club, Knights of Columbus and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Born in Hilo, he is survived by his wife Evelyn; son Moody III; daughters Moodette Kaapana, Cathleen, Tracy and Jaydeen Keliihoomalu; sisters Ordis Jury and Velma Choy; stepmother Hannah Keliihoomalu; half brother Kentworth; half sister Karla Akiona; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Borthwick Mortuary. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at St. Anthony Church, Kailua, where services will begin at 7 p.m., and after 9 a.m. Wednesday at the mortuary. Burial will be in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Punchbowl.
