Waipahu stops Moanalua

The Marauders will meet Kalaheo tonight
for the OIA basketball championship

For Waipahu High School's basketball team, it came down to about six blinks of an eye and a wide receiver last night at the Blaisdell Arena.

After engaging in a seesaw battle with the previously unbeaten Moanalua Menehunes that lasted almost the entire 32 minutes, the upstart Waipahu Marauders (10-3) found themselves having to defend a 44-43 lead for the final 6.2 seconds.

Alvin Takeshita, better known for his exploits catching passes on the gridiron, became the player of the moment for Waipahu, assigned to guard one of the slickest and trickiest ballplayers in the state, Moanalua guard Ramsey Williams.

The inbound play strategy was to work the ball out to Williams, the driving force in Moanalua's 1996 state championship, for the last shot.

"They sent him down and tried to flare him out into the corner," said Waipahu head coach Cosmo Arakawa.

Takeshita, anything but a basketball purist but a fine athlete, refused to allow Williams enough movement to catch a pass from Brian Rosado-Galindo. Rosado-Galindo wound up having to take on off-balance shot that banged off the glass as the buzzer sounded.

Waipahu earned a shot at three-time defending league champion Kalaheo (11-0) in tonight's Oahu Interscholastic Association finale. Game time is 8 p.m.

"I was just denying, fronting him, playing chest-to-chest with him," Takeshita said. "He was trying to use the screens to get open because he knew we were trying to take him out of the game."

Williams scored all of his 14 points in the first three quarters but Takeshita and teammate Neal Gossett allowed him nothing in the fourth.

"He has good hands and is very quick off the first step, so you play him different ways."

Said Moanalua coach Eddie Maruyama, "They outplayed us and outhustled us. They got all the loose balls. They got all the boards. So I don't think we could match their intensity level. We tried to at the end but then it was a little too tight."

Jerome Williams and Pelupelu Vasega combined for 21 points to lead the Waipahu offense.

Moanalua fell to 11-1.

Moanalua Jones 8, Kesaji 4, Rosado-Galindo 4, Marshall-Greene 5, R. Williams 14, Bruce 4, Kamakura 4.

Kalaheo 40, Kaiser 35: Steve Hess' timely 3-pointer with 2 minutes and 15 seconds left turned a two-point barnburner into a five-point cushion (33-28) for the Mustangs.

"It was a big shot," Kalaheo head coach Pete Smith said. "We needed another bucket and Steve hit the big shot. Anytime a guy hits a 3-pointer with a couple minutes left and you've got only a two-point lead, it's a timely shot."

But Smith knew he and his team were lucky to get past Kaiser.

They entered the intermission with a 26-16 lead and complete control of the game.

But when they returned to the court, they didn't score another field goal until the second half was nearly 912 minutes gone. Kaiser (9-3) outscored Kalaheo, 8-0, in the third quarter.
