Daniel Makuakane
was the ‘Maile Man’

Daniel M. “Maile Man” Makuakane became an expert in growing maile. The Big Island resident was the first to grow maile vines under greenhouse conditions.

Makuakane, 74, of Hilo died Sunday in Hilo Hospital.

Makuakane, a retired state Department of Corrections prison guard, often gave talks on Hawaiian medicinal herbs and maile cultivation. He published a booklet on Hawaiian medicinal herbs.

The state Foundation on Culture and the Arts recorded his work on growing maile in its oral history recordings on Hawaiian masters.

Makuakane, a former U.S. Army staff sergeant, was born in Kapoho, Hawaii. He is survived by wife Lydia; sons Junior Ah Hee and Moses Makuakane; daughters Elizabeth Hansen, Annie McLellan, Theresa Makuakane-Drechsel and Gail Makuakane-Lundin; brothers Herbert, Peter and Joseph Lee; 11 grandchildren; and two great- grandchildren.

Mary P. Bannister, 95, of Honolulu died Jan. 18 at home. Lila R. “Peggy” Campbell, 96, of Honolulu, a real estate agent and government employee, died Wednesday. Campbell also was a harpist and poet. Her poetry was included in 10 anthologies and was featured on radio shows in New York and Los Angeles. She was also listed in “Who’s Who in American Poetry.” She is survived by nephew T.L. Michiko K. Chinna, 74, of Honolulu, retired owner/proprietor of Michiko’s Flowers, died Thursday in Queen’s Hospital.
