Sam Sato,
founder of Maui diner

By Gary Kubota
Star-Bulletin

WAILUKU -- Even after retiring, Sam Shuzo Sato loved his family’s restaurant too much to keep away.

He would sit near the door every morning and greet customers.

“He loved talking story. It was good for him and good for the people,” said his daughter Lynne Toma, who with her husband Charles now operate Sam Sato’s Inc.

Sato, the son of Japanese immigrant sugar workers, died Monday on his 83rd birthday.

At 19, he founded Sam Sato Store in 1933 in Spreckelsville Camp 3, where he sold canned goods, ice cream and candies. The most popular item was manju, a sweet Japanese bean cake made by his mother, Mite.

Sato married Gladys Watanabe in 1935, and she added her specialties to the store’s baked goods: flaky apple turnovers and light, fried doughnuts.

He and Gladys retired in 1980. She died in 1990.

The family-run restaurant, now located in the Millyard in Wailuku, remains a popular breakfast and lunch diner for residents.

Besides Lynne and Charles, Sam is survived by his daughters Lorraine Tamaribuchi, Katherine Fukuda, and Faith Miyahira, his sisters Mitsue Kubo, Kimie Shibuya and Takeko Inamasu, nine grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

The funeral service is at 5 p.m. tomorrow at Nakamura Mortuary. The family requests casual attire and no flowers.
