and social worker

Yoshiko Mayer, 76, former legal secretary and social worker, died Sunday morning after a lengthy struggle with cancer.
She was the wife of retired Honolulu Star-Bulletin writer Phil Mayer, and the widow of Hawaii labor leader Jack W. Hall, state director of the ILWU, who died in 1971.

The former Yoshiko Ogawa grew up on a Big Island sugar plantation, the child of immigrant laborers. She graduated from the University of Hawaii and earned master’s degrees in social work and education. She was a longtime secretary with the labor law firm of Bouslog and Symonds.

She was also a former state social worker and secretary with the National Labor Relations Board. She served as executive secretary of a state agricultural development committee and a state government reorganization commission under former Gov. George Ariyoshi.

“She was never politically active, but also never politically disinterested,” said her husband. Despite failing health, she insisted on taking a trip to visit family in October but “she voted before she left. She would never skip voting,” he said. He said she had a “hands-on interest in Japanese culture,” was fluent in the language and a frequent traveler to Japan.

Yoshiko Mayer is survived by husband Phil; son Eric; daughter Michele Burton; hanai daughter Ayako Nitta; and three grandchildren. Also surviving are sisters Mary Ann McCabe of San Francisco, Yuriko Laurent of Hilo, Miyuki Hruby and Marilyn Ogawa of Oahu.
