He loved to teach, said Fujio Matsuda, former UH president who met Mitsuda as a fellow undergraduate at Rose Polytechnic Institute in Terre Haute, Ind., in the 1940s. His office was always open to anyone who needed help. The subjects that he taught were rather difficult but he was always available to help them.
Mitsuda died Dec. 21 at age 71. He retired from the university in 1995, having taught his dynamics course to almost all engineering students who passed through during his tenure.
Colleagues and students recall he was always receptive and gracious to those who needed his attention, and that he showed great ingenuity in using visual aids to get across basic concepts.
One of his achievements was research and documentation which helped get the Kamehameha V post office on Merchant Street named a historic landmark by the American Society of Civil Engineers in 1988.
The old post office has the distinction of being the oldest reinforced concrete building west of the Mississippi River.
Music was one of Mitsudas avocations: He began studying the violin at Central Intermediate and attended Punahou Music School, and practiced daily most of his life. He also served on the board of the Honolulu Chamber Music Series for many years.
He loved to play his fiddle, Matsuda said. From the time we were undergraduates together, he was always playing his fiddle; and he kept that up until he died.
Born in Honolulu, Mitsuda graduated from McKinley High School. He entered the Army in 1945 and was sworn in at Schofield Barracks with former Gov. George Ariyoshi, later serving in Japan during the occupation.
After the service, he earned a bachelors degree in civil engineering from Rose Polytechnic Institute in 1949. Mitsudas engineering education also included a masters in 1952 and doctorate in 1965, both from the University of Illinois.
Mitsuda is survived by wife Amy; sons Mark K. and Todd K.; and sister, Dr. Hatsuko Mitsuda.
