Garden Nightwalks: Explore Ho‘omaluhia Botanical Garden when the moon is full, 6:30 to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Gate opens 5:30 p.m. for picnics. Guided walks are free; bring walking shoes, bug repellent, rain gear and a flashlight. Reserve at 233-7323.

Hawaii Loa Trail hike: Kost Pankiwskyj leads the way to the top of the Ko‘olau mountains, Saturday. Five miles, six hours. Costs $5. Call the Hawai‘i Nature Center at 955-0100.

Taro Patch Party: Get muddy while learning about taro’s role in Hawaiian culture and taro farming, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Hawai‘i Nature Center. Costs $5. Reserve at 955-0100.

Fitness and strong man tournament: Women’s and men’s competitions, 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Castle Theater. Call 242-7469, Maui.

Kailua 5K Fun-Run Walk: Join the Friends of Kailua High School, 7 a.m. Sunday at the gym. Entry $8 plus late fee; proceeds will go to the school’s Computer Academy. Call Ann Higashi at 266-7900 or Ed Kemper at 524-0330.

Pauoa Woods hike: Six miles on a devious ridge walk in Tantalus with John Hoover of the Hawaiian Trail & Mountain Club, 8 a.m. Sunday. Costs $2. Call 595-2612.

In-line skating: The Wheel Thing’s “How

Not To Crash Course” for adults is 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, Oct. 3 through 24. Costs $85 general, $65 University of Hawaii students. Call the UH Outdoor Activities Center at 956-6468.

Course for all ages 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 7, 9, 16 and 23. Costs $90. Call the YWCA at 538-7061.

“Get Rolling, Hawaii” course for ages 16 and older is 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays, Oct. 15, 22 and 29. Costs $65. Call 48-SKATE (487-5283). Skates and protective gear will be provided for all classes.

Honolulu Zoo: The zoo opens at 8 a.m. on the first and third Wednesdays of the month. General admission $6; $2 with Yum Yum Tree senior card. First Wednesdays feature a botanical tour at 8:45 a.m. for $2 more. Third Wednesdays, tai chi practice begins 8 a.m. Call 971-7174.

Nature Conservancy hikes: Two guided hikes a month to Honouliuli Preserve, home to more than 45 rare native plants and animals. Donation. Call 537-4508.
