When his patients and colleagues remember Dr. Ivar J. Larsen, it's not the image of a detached and aloof professional."When he was in charge of the spine clinic, he would take children on his lap and talk to them, then they didn't mind having the treatment," said nurse Faith Nakano, who served with Larsen during his 25 years as an orthopedic physician and surgeon at Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children.
"He was such a fatherly, personable man, a people-loving person. He was a caring man to us as well as patients. I really appreciated him," Nakano said.
The hospital's medical staff secretary May Matsumoto said: "We all referred to him as Grandpa Larsen" when he returned to the hospital to keep in touch even after his retirement.
"He was a gentle person, well-liked by the staff."
Larsen, 82, died Saturday in Honolulu.
