Baldwin "Blue" Kaleipokii Makua Sr., 72, who began surfing as a kid on his mother's wooden ironing board and became one of Hawaii's legendary beachboys, died Friday. He had prostate cancer and had been under hospice care at his Kailua home for about six months, his wife, Barbara, said today.
He continued going to Waikiki until he became very ill "because that was his life," she said.
"If he would see somebody he didn't think was having a very good time, he'd go and talk to them and invite them into a group of local guys. If it made them happy, it made him happy."
That was the style of the old-time beachboys, who took tourists surfing and canoeing just to make them love Hawaii, she said. "Blue was really upset with this new type of beachboy thing - you give the money and I'll give you the lesson."
When he was young, she said, he would go early in the morning to help his brother, a famous beachboy at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. After setting up umbrellas and cleaning the beach, he went surfing and didn't return until it was time to take down the umbrellas, she said.
Jama Keanu, who paddled with Makua, called him "the blue boy" because his nails and lips were blue with cold, she said.
Makua was a master steersman as well as a surfer. He studied the way Duke Kahanamoku paddled "and the way he did everything," his wife said. "This is who he really learned from."
He paddled at the Hui Nalu Surf Club with coach John D. Kaupiko and was one of the founders of the Waikiki Surf Club.
"He's one of the last good ones," said Archie Kaaua, who started paddling with Makua when he was a teen-ager. "In the ocean, he was unbeatable. In the surf, he was unbeatable."
From 1958 to 1963, Makua steered the Waikiki Surf Club to six straight victories in the 40-mile Molokai-to-Oahu canoe race. He was on eight winning teams in 11 races from 1953-1963.
"When we got into a canoe to race," Kaaua said, "I don't care how good the crew was or how bad it was, when he was in the boat, we all felt we were supermen and we were going to win, and we did."
Wally Froiseth said he and Makua grew up together on the beach, surfing and paddling canoes for the Waikiki Surf Club.
"With Blue and the crews we kind of dominated paddling for a few years." They hung out at Kuhio Beach by the old Waikiki Tavern (which had a blue room named for Makua) and dived for fish and turtles (then legal), Froiseth said. "Girls that hung around the beach would cook 'em up for us. In the evening, everyone had a good fish fry or good turtle steak." They asked people on the beach to surf tandem and go canoeing with them, "just to have them enjoy the sport that we enjoyed."
He said he and Makua also worked together on boats at Eniwetok after World War II and "had a lot of adventures down there."
Makua's wife said her husband was with a group maintaining meteorology stations on Baker Island in the Line Islands when it was bombed in December 1941.
While he loved the beach, he couldn't make a living there so he went into construction and became a heavy equipment operator to support his family, she said.
Survivors include sons Blue Jr. and Nelson, both of Hawaii, and Alec, of San Francisco; a sister, Violet, and three grandchildren.
Memorial services and scattering of ashes will be at 7 a.m. Sept. 14 at the beach fronting Duke's in Waikiki. Mrs. Makua said she didn't dare have the services over Labor Day weekend because of the Liliuokalani races in Kona, which her husband always went to. "Blue wouldn't even be here."
