Shigeura, 80, played key role
in mac nuts, guava

By Star-Bulletin Staff

Gordon T. Shigeura, 80, of Hilo, a retired horticulturist whose research has helped the macadamia nut and guava industry, died July 17 in the Life Care Center of Hilo.

Shigeura, former professor of horticulture at the Beaumont Agriculture Station in Hilo, wrote 20 papers on how to protect crops, and several articles on the guava and macadamia culture.

He assisted in the mechanical harvesting of the guava fruit and developed infield mechanical nut huskers for the macadamia nut.

Shigeura also corrected soil deficiencies for macadamia nut growers in the Hamakua district and found the use of honey bees to improve pollination for the nuts.

Shigeura is survived by wife Yuki; son Harry M.; and sisters Laura Harimoto and Jean Shimaura.
