Dr. Joseph V. Miccio, 81, a retired University of Hawaii professor and chief executive officer and president of Hawaii Biotechnology Group, died Friday.Miccio, former president and general manager of the Wright Aeronautical Division, was part of the design and creation team of the rotary engine used in Mazda RX-7 cars today.
By the time Miccio left Curtiss-Wright Corp., he was senior vice president and supervised the development of the first flight simulator now used in pilot training.
While Miccio worked at Curtiss-Wright, he attended night school where he earned his undergraduate degree and doctorate in education. He then left New York and in the fall of 1966 began working as professor of management for the University of Hawaii, College of Business Administration.
In 1985, Miccio received the Dennis Chang Outstanding Teaching Award from the First Interstate Bank Foundation.
A native of Brooklyn, Miccio is survived by wife Lillian; daughter Kathryn Giandoreggio; son Michael; sister Rose Desiere; brother Sal; and four grandchildren.
