Stephen A. Derby, 91, a banker, died Friday at the Arcadia Retirement Home.Derby, recipient of the Boy Scouts of America's highest honor, the Silver Beaver Award, became an active member when his oldest son became a Cub Scout. Derby represented the Scouts on many national and international boards. He also served as president of the Aloha Council and organized a Honolulu Cub Pack.
In 1932, Derby started the credit department at Bank of Hawaii. Thirty-eight years later he retired as senior vice president of the Credit and Loan Review Department. After retirement, Derby continued to serve with Bank of Hawaii as a director, until 1975.
Derby served on many organizations including the Honolulu Community Chest, Footlights Club, Pacific and Asian Affairs Council, Honolulu Symphony Society, Phi Gamma Delta, Yale Club of Hawaii, YMCA, and the Air Force, U.S. Army and Bishop Museum associations.
Derby is survived by wife Dora; children Anna Blackwell, Martha McDaniel, and Philander and John M. Cooke; sister Virginia Asensio; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held 9:30 a.m. tomorrow at Central Union Church. Private burial. No flowers.
