The program is open to youngsters 13 to 17 years of age who have basic swimming skills and a desire to learn about the ocean.
"We're not going to turn them into lifeguards, we just want to make them more aware of the dangers of our coastline," lifeguard Lt. Mark Cunningham said.
The program offers each group of 16 youngsters a five-day course that includes an introduction to water safety, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, first aid, and surf rescue techniques using ocean swimming, paddleboarding and lifesaving craft.
"I wish it was bigger and better and more widely available," said Cunningham, adding that a suggested $25 donation will help ensure that the program continues.
The first five-day session begins June 17 and the last begins Aug. 5. They are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m., at Kailua Beach Park, 395-3994; Ala Moana Beach Park, 924-3313; Pokai Bay, 695-8967; and Ehukai Beach Park, 638-8297.
People are encouraged to call for reservations or information as there is room for only 16 participants per session in each area.
The city also will set up booths so people can sign up in person from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 18 and 19 at:
The City Store, Ala Moana Center
Hawaiian Island Creations, Kailua
Makaha Beach
