Ex-head of Tax Foundation dead at 85>

Fred Bennion of Pensacola, Fla., the longtime executive director of the Tax Foundation of Hawaii, died April 25 at home.

Bennion was 85. He has been director of the local tax lobbying organization from 1958 to 1978. He was also a member of the state Tax Review Commission and was known in Hawaii for his orchid collections, said Lowell Kalapa, current Tax Foundation director.

He is survived by wife Elaine; son Douglas; and daughter Susan DeWolf.

Services in Florida. Contributions may be made to a favorite charity.


Pedro G. Agapay of Honolulu, employee of Leahi Hospital for 30 years, died Wednesday in Leahi Hospital. Agapay, 84, was born in Badoc, Ilocos Norte, the Philippines. He is survived by wife Leila A.M.; son Jimmie P.; daughters Bernice D. Granger, Caroline K.A. Paulo, Abbie K. Good and Karen L. Agapay; brother Victor; and 11 grandchildren. Florence H. "Bunky" Aiona of Honolulu died April 22 in Kaiser Hospital.

Aiona, 63, was born in Makawao, Maui. She is survived by son Melvin W.; daughters Deborah M. Tyler and Shirlene K.A. Tamayori; sister Winifred Rapoza; and two grandchildren.

Jane C. Arelliano of Waianae died April 24 at Waianae Comprehensive Health Center.

Arelliano, 85, was born in Haleiwa. She survived by daughters Margaret Sepulveda and Sarah C.

Eva N. Ezell of Sacramento, formerly of Hawaii, died Saturday, April 20. She was a retired teacher who taught at Lunalilo Elementary School for 35 years. Ezell, 91, was born in Hawaii. Leslie Fariasof River Oaks, Texas, a chef, died Friday in Fort Worth, Texas. Farias, 42, was born in Honolulu.He is survived by wife Karen; son Joshua Bowden; daughter Shelly Hwass; mother Hazel Pu; stepfather Danny Pu; brothers Manuel III, Christopher G. and Robert D.; stepbrothers Danny, Tony and Walter Pu; sisters Carol A. and Mary E. Farias, Anna L. Jesionka, Ruth L. Nakooka and Cathleen C. Rodrigues; stepsisters Tracy Kekipi and Tricia Potts; and one granddaughter. Services have been held.

Juana G. Galicia of Paia, Maui died Monday at home. Galicia, 82, was born in Santa Lucia, Ilocos Sur, the Philippines. She is survived by sons Rafael, Lorenzo, Miguel and Rodolfo; daughters Estafania Aldaya, Caridad Polocarpio and Florentina Brandwood; 26 grandchildren and several great-grandchildrn. Ayako Goshi of Honolulu died April 4 in Nuuanu Hale Hospital. Goshi, 92, was born in Lahaina. She is survived by sons Tsutomu, Thomas Y. and Richard K.; daughter Gladys M. Nagamine; sisters Alice M. Itsuyo Hamamoto of Honolulu died April 16 in Kuakini Hospital. Hamamoto was 79. She is survived by husband Harold K.; sons Paul M. and Walter M.; daughter Patsy M. Guro; sister Mieko Mae; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Private service.

The Rev. David J. Harada of Torrance, Calif., formerly of Hawaii, died April 15 in Torrance. He served on the Queen Liliuokalani Children's Center Advisory Board. Harada, 66, was born in Lahaina. He is survived by wife Lillian M.O.; son Edward; daughter Grace Harada; brothers Dr. William and Joseph R.; sister Cynthia Harada; and four grandchildren. Services held.

Natsu Hashimoto of Honolulu died April 18 in Hale Pulama Mau. Hashimoto, 88, was born in Kilauea, Kauai. She is survived by sons Shigeo and Harold; daughters Peggy H. Hashimoto and Matsumi Suyeoka; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Private services.

Sebastian Hernandez of Ewa Beach, who retired as a heavy equipment operator at Oahu Sugar Co. with 50 years of service, died Wednesday in Ewa Beach. Hernandez, 79, was born in Honolulu. He is survived by wife Juana; sons Larry, Wallace and Donald; brothers Carmelo Hernandez and Antone Fernandez; sisters Bella Perez, Mary Sedeno, Lucy Dela Pena, Perfecta Antolin, Frances Acia and Jennie Marshall; 13 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. Tian Xi Jian of Honolulu died April 15 in St. Francis Hospital.

Rodney P. Kamalii of El Segundo, Calif., a flight attendant for Hawaiian Airlines, died April 19 in El Segundo. He was Aloha Week King in 1977 and Aloha Week Prince in 1963. Kamalii, 50, was born in Honolulu. He is survived by sister Leona A. Joy and Leilani T. Kamalii. Mass: noon Saturday at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace. Call after 10 a.m. Private burial.

Kathleen A. Kidder of Kahului, who helped start the thrift shop at Hale Makua, died yesterday in Hale Makua. She also was a volunteer at Maui Memorial Hospital. Kidder, 72, was born in Gross Pointe, Mich. She is survived by husband Philip; daughters Kathleen and Elizabeth Kidder, Carolyn Gautusa and Sister Josephine Batchler; and two grandchildren. Lillian L. "Lani" Kon-Cabrera of Honolulu died April 21 in St. Francis Hospital.

Kon-Cabrera, 66, was born in Honolulu. She is survived by sons Elpidio B. Jr., Miguel E., Harry C., Mario E. and Fred R. Cabrera; daughters Regina Rogers, Cindy Inn and Queenie Cabrera; companion Larry Lopes; brothers Henry, James, Clarence, Harry, Samuel and Eugene Kon; sisters Helen "Sahat" Daly, Elsie "Abuise" Sequencia, Elizabeth "Betty" Balocon, Pearl Sumida, Mary-Jane Robins, Rosaline Bumanglag, Violet Almarza; 15 grandchildren; and 29 great grandchildren.

Charles D. McKee of El Paso, Texas, formerly of Honolulu, died Monday. McKee, 80, was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force and the U.S. Marines. Kameo "Yaeko" Okada of Pearl City, formerly of Akepo Lane in Palama, died April 20 in Aloha Health Care.

Okada, 81, was a retired housekeeper at Kaiser Hospital. She was born in Waianae.

Okada is survived by husband Satoru; sons Griffith Y. and Miles T.; daughters Ethel R. Yukihiro and Jean S. Ikeda; brother Harry Katsuya; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

John Y.M. Park of San Mateo, Calif. died Tuesday in Kaiser Hospital. Park, 73, was born in Honolulu.He is survived by sons Michael, Kenneth and Gregory; wife Lily W.S. Richardson, 76, was born in Clinton, Mass.

Louis T. "Tata Louie" Rotor of Waianae, former manager of the Holiday Theater in Nanakuli, died last April 20 at home.

Rotor, 69, was born in Magsingal, Ilocos Sur, the Philippines. He is survived by companion Cindy M. Waipa; sons Lloyd A. and Lance Rapes; daughters Millie Kaaihue, Linda Morales, Herminia Kauhako and Patricia Antolin; hanai daughter Lydia Agbayani; a brother; 19 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Scott A. Stevenson of Makawao, Maui, who was killed April 21 when the motorcycle he was riding collided with a pickup truck in south Maui, will be remembered in a graveside service April 29.
