A 61-year-old Kaneohe man died after an alleged drunk driver who was on the wrong side of the road struck the pedestrian late last night in Waikiki, police said.

The victim was an Outrigger Hotels & Resorts employee, identified by the Honolulu Medical Examiner as Ray Kanemori.

Police arrested a 28-year-old man for suspicion of negligent homicide and drunk driving. Police said the suspect, driving a 2005 white Impala sedan, was driving the wrong way on Walina street near Kuhio Avenue at 11:20 p.m. when he hit the victim.

Kanemori was taken to Queen's Medical Center in critical condition where he later died.

This was Oahu's fourth pedestrian death this year.

>> Yui Tung Ng, 73, of Kukui Gardens was hit by a car Jan. 14  as he crossed North Vineyard Boulevard at Aala Street near Chinatown and died a day later at a local hospital.

>> On Jan. 12, Hideno T. Matsumoto, 81, of Nuuanu died after being hit by a car while crossing Pali Highway near Dowsett Avenue.

>> On Jan. 7, 52-year-old Sachiko Kojima of Tokyo was crossing Kaiolu Street when a van driven by a Waikiki woman turned left from Kuhio Avenue and hit her. Kojima was taken to the hospital in critical condition and died the following day from head injuries. 

Hawaii leads the nation in elderly pedestrian fatalities, with a rate of 6.97 deaths per 100,000 for people 65 years and older in 2007-2008, according to AARP. The national rate was 2.33 deaths per 100,000 people.
