The keiki of Samuel M. Kamakau charter school will gather for a book signing and short performance to celebrate the publication of their book, “;He Ka'ao No Hauwahine Laua 'o Meheanu,”; 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at Borders, Windward Mall.

The bilingual book tells the tale of a greedy fisherman named Kanakapi who learns the mistake of his gluttonous ways and the deeper meaning of taking only what is needed.

The book was illustrated by the kindergarten and first-grade students, with the assistance of the teachers at the Hawaiian-language immersion school.

The story was developed to create connections between the students and their two outdoor learning sites, Na Pohaku o Hauwahine and Ka Loko I'a o He'eia. The process included visits to the actual locations where the legends took place and talk-story sessions with people from the area.
