Clay overcomes rain to win Hypo Meeting

GOETZIS, Austria » American decathlete Bryan Clay and British heptathlete Jessica Ennis performed through heavy rain yesterday to win the Hypo Meeting.

Clay, a Castle High graduate, won the 100 meters, discus and javelin disciplines to finish with 8,483 points for the Olympic champion's second victory at the annual meeting in Goetzis, Austria. He also won in 2006.

Romain Barras of France took second with 8,297 points, and Leonel Suarez of Cuba was third with 8,286.

Ennis finished just 42 points short of a personal-best score with 6,689 points. Tatyana Chernova of Russia took second with 6,572, and Lyudmyla Yosypenko of Ukraine was third with 6,260.

The Hypo Meeting was the second leg of the 2010 IAAF Combined Events Challenge.

 

Trap offered new contract

Hawaii baseball coach Mike Trapasso, whose contract ends after this season, will receive a new offer to remain with UH.

Athletic director Jim Donovan said he spoke with Trapasso after Hawaii beat Fresno State 9-6 yesterday for the WAC championship. “;I congratulated him and told him that he lived up to his end of the deal, and I would follow through on mine. I told him after last year if he'd make the regionals I'd extend his contract.”;

Said Trapasso: “;We talked after the game, but it's really about the kids right now. I am lucky and I am honored to be coaching at Hawaii.”;
