Used cooking oil collected at dining facilities at Marine Corps Base Hawaii is being used in a biodiesel fuel demonstration project.

Officials at the Kaneohe base said the oil will be blended with petroleum diesel to form B20 biodiesel fuel. It will be used to power two tactical, nondeployed vehicles operating on the base.

A project team will monitor fuel quality and stability, as well as the vehicles' performance, while using the renewable biofuel blend over an eight- to 12-month period.

B20 is used by two ferry boats that take visitors across Pearl Harbor to the USS Arizona Memorial.
