Fishcake offers evening of art

The Contemporary Museum joins Fishcake Gallery to present “;Mystery May Madness,”; an event that features art, design and fashion.

The evening includes Pop-Up stores with items by P55dle, SooZou, Unleash Studios, Sandoaloha and Premadonna. Also, 50 mystery grab bags, selling for $50, will contain custom art by such local artists as Pegge Hopper, Elaine Baxter, Mary Mitsuda, Jodi Endicott, Kelly Sueda, Ryan Higa and Russell Sunabe. There will be drinks and pupus as well.

New York artist to 'tie knot' here

Attend the “;wedding”; of Maria the Korean Bride in a performance art event at 4 p.m. May 30 at the Manifest in Chinatown.

New York artist Maria Yoon will tie the knot in all 50 states; Hawaii is her 46th stop. She married a dog musher in Alaska, a 700-pound Black Angus in Nebraska and a show girl dressed as Diana Ross in Nevada.

The free event will include a question-and-answer session with the artist as well as a slide show of her previous weddings. Asian museum taps Maui native

Maui native Alan Chong has been named director of the Asian Civilisations Museum, one of five national museums in Singapore.

The announcement came Wednesday after a yearlong global search.

Chong had been curator at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. He is a graduate of Yale University and earned his Ph.D. in art history at the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University.

Kids film festival coming in June

The fourth annual University of Hawaii KIDS FIRST! Film Festival returns in June and July with four summer Sundays of free family films.

This year's screenings will include green themes, animation adapted from beloved children's literature, and stories about kids and pets from around the world. The films are suitable for children from age 2 to tweens.

The following films are scheduled to play at 3 p.m. at the UH-Manoa Art Auditorium on the following dates:

» June 13: ”;Surf's Up!”; Short animation on the perils plastic poses in our oceans, plus a feature starring Barbie as a champion surfer who sets out to save the ocean. For age 5 to 10.
» June 27: “;Animated Shorts: Storybook and Song.”; Award-winning animated short films bring outstanding children's picture books to life. Age 3 to 8.
» July 11: “;Go Green Go!”; Wubbzy, a crooked-tailed animated character, teaches preschoolers fun lessons about ecology and personal responsibility. Preceded by a short storybook animation of “;In the Small, Small Pond,”; narrated by Laura Dern. Age 2 to 5.
» July 18: “;Worldwide Kids & Critters.”; International live-action shorts and animated films deal with themes of families and pets with creativity and wit. Age 8 to 12.

College lectures focus on 'Genius'

The University of Hawaii-Manoa Outreach College launches its summer series of lectures with the theme “;The Genius in Us All.”;

Catch a screening of Werner Herzog's documentary “;Encounters at the End of the World”; on June 9, highlighting the lives of people at McMurdo Station, headquarters of the National Science Foundation in Antarctica.

Herzog showcases the experiences of the marine biologists, physicists, plumbers and truck drivers who live in this unique community. The documentary is accompanied by remarks from UH physicist Peter Gorham.

On July 7, Henk Rogers, president and CEO of Blue Planet Software, will present “;From Blue Planet to Blue Mars: Avatars and Replicants for Alternative Realities.”;

Rogers, who was responsible for bringing Tetris to the United States, will offer a sneak peek of his newest invention, a high-definition virtual world on Mars, and talk about his mission to end our dependence on fossil fuels, as the founder of the Blue Planet Foundation.

 

'Ka'iulani' team to speak in Hilo

Roy Tjioe and Ric Galindez, partners in Island Film Group, which produced the film “;Princess Ka'iulani,”; will speak at a daylong media arts conference at the University of Hawaii at Hilo (UCB 100 Building) on Saturday.

Oahu-based Tjioe and Galindez will talk about the making and distribution of “;Princess Ka'iulani,”; as well as the challenges of making independent films in Hawaii.

Other noted speakers include local filmmaker, actress and teacher Gloria Baraquio; PBS Hawaii's vice president of creative services, Robert Pennybacker; Hawaii Pacific Academy's director of digital media, Ari Bernstein; and digital media artist Jensen Nihei. The day concludes with a free student film festival.
