Counting the ways to capture summer's golden glow, even if you shun the sun, and learning to contour will be among the tips and tricks shared when Nordstrom's Cosmetic Trend Event returns to Honolulu on May 29.

During a nearly two-hour demonstration, industry experts will share the newest makeup, skin care and fragrances from their respective brands, demonstrating how to best use them for natural to glam effect.

Among the guest artists in town for the event will be M.A.C Cosmetics senior pro artist Victor Cembellin, Chanel Cosmetics national artist John Fussel, NARS Cosmetics national makeup stylist Janice Daoud and international makeup stylist RC Stephens, Laura Mercier global artist Jarvis Johnson and celebrity manicurist Deborah Lippmann.

Ross Burton, who's helped women like Michelle Obama, Fergie, Eva Longoria, Sophia Bush and Zooey Deschanel look their best, will also be there to offer advice and application know-how.

Following the morning's stage events, the artists will move to the floor of the cosmetic department for one-on-one makeovers.

Over at the NARS counter, Daoud will be showing the summer 2010 collection inspired by Catherine Deneuve's 1967 “;Belle du Jour”; character, Severine Serizy. Makeup artist Francois Nars has said of his muse, “;Her look is effortless — she has an incredible inner sophistication.”;

As interpreted by Nars, Daoud said, the look is defined by “;3-D skin; juicy, fruity lips and cheek; and an indigo eye.”;

New to younger cosmetic vixens will be the comeback of contouring, last seen in the days of “;Dynasty”; and '80s pop.

“;When you contour the face, certain areas are going to pop,”; said Daoud. “;We sculpt the face using Multiple sticks, giving dimension and highlights wherever they're needed. The season is about having a fresh face, fresh skin, and we want it to look luminous, radiant.”;

Lips are finished with a layer of sheer red, pink or orange.

With emphasis on the skin and lips, a lighter touch is called for on eyes, which get a watercolor-light splash of color in hues of aqua to iridescent ocean blue and purple on the eyes. “;It's about a wash of color on the eye, rather than definition,”; Daoud said. If one wants more definition, this is achieved with soft-touch pencils that create a smudged effect, rather than a hard line.

; Whereas makeup in recent seasons has focused on one feature, eyes or lips, Daoud said a coming trend will feature an all-over, balanced look, with even emphasis on all features.

“;Makeup is back,”; she said. “;Fall will be going into contouring even more. The no-makeup look has been big for so long, but this is the last season for that.”;

Makeup trends go hand-in-hand with fashion trends, with companies like NARS and M.A.C working with individual designers to come up with face looks to suit runway styles. Among designers NARS worked with for New York Fashion Week for Spring/Summer 2010 were Thakoon, Marchesa, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Derek Lam and Marc Jacobs. M.A.C worked with Erin Fetherston, Carolina Herrera, Rodarte, Alexander Wang, Band of Outsiders, L.A.M.B. and Jason Wu, to name a few.

The grown-up look coincides with a new sophistication that has emerged with the recession, as austerity is teaching many consumers to put quality classics ahead of cheap, short-lived quantity.

According to artist Diane Kendal for NARS, contouring imparts strength around the eyes and cheekbones at a time job seekers need to look more womanly than girly.

At M.A.C, women have a choice of three looks for summer — the sunny To the Beach collection, craft paper-inspired Pret-a-Papier collection, and Dazzleglass collection. The latter is marked by Superglass lip gloss bearing sparkling, faceted pearls that shatter and reflect light.

To the Beach is a natural for Hawaii, with eye, lip and cheek colors filling compacts and pencils embellished with seashore imagery of shells, coral, starfish and seahorses.

The collection bursts with orange, copper and bronze hues, and let's face it, just because we live in one of the sunniest places on Earth, doesn't mean most of us can or are willing to bask in the sun.

Those trapped in offices or who fear the punishing power of UV rays can get the golden look with the help of M.A.C's newest bronzing powders, cream bronzer and highlighting Luster Drops.

For eyes, there are Eye Kohls in hues of blues and greens, such as “;Rosemary & Thyme”; and “;Float on By,”; a dark green turquoise.

Lips capture the color of the sunset, from pale pinks and peaches, to metallics of rosy copper with gold pearl, and bronzed plum.

Each of the summer looks can be finished with M.A.C Studio Fix Lash that the company's artists say works equally for photography, catwalk or real life due to its light, clump-free mousse-style formula.

M.A.C director of makeup artistry Nadine Luke compared it to an American Express card, saying, “;Don't leave home without it.

“;Mascara is the silent partner to any made-up face. From strong and bold bedroom eyes to the nude subtlety of 'no-makeup' makeup, mascara completes the look.”;
