Rainbows' Williams will not be back

It seems the Dwain Williams experiment is officially over with the Hawaii men's basketball team.

A source indicated yesterday the 6-foot guard has been released from the program.

Williams showed he was a gifted scorer at times for UH last season, but the San Diego native and Providence transfer's time with the team was marred by team suspensions under coach Bob Nash. He averaged 14 points per game — also the number of games he played.

He posted a career-high 36 points against Saint Mary's in the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic.

New Rainbow Warriors coach Gib Arnold said after his hire that Williams had “;a mountain to climb”; to earn the right to stay with the team. Williams lasted longer than Jeremy Lay and Aleksandar Milovic, but apparently fell short of expectations needed to remain.

Williams' departure opens up a scholarship, but today is also the last day of the spring (late) signing period.

Arnold previously said that he'd take a number of factors into account for any final decision made on Williams and other returning players, including work ethic on and off the basketball court and grades.

Williams is unable to transfer to another Division I program with his remaining eligibility time, so will either have to drop down a level or turn pro to continue playing basketball.

There are only four scholarship players left on the Hawaii roster from last season, and two who actually played — Hiram Thompson and Doug Kurtz. Bill Amis and Zane Johnson redshirted.
