Balentine fourth at WAC meet

Hawaii freshman Samantha Balentine placed fourth after the first day of the heptathlon at the Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Ruston, La.

Balentine cleared 5 feet, 8 inches to finish first the high jump and posted personal bests in the 100-meter hurdles (15.27 seconds), shot put (36-4.25) and 200-meter dash (27.07 seconds). She enters the second day with 3,003 points. Idaho's Ulrike Hartz leads with 3,263 points.

 

HPU, BYUH reach quarterfinals

Brigham Young-Hawaii and Hawaii Pacific won their matches yesterday to advance to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II women's tennis championships in Altamonte Springs, Fla.

No. 3 BYUH defeated No. 10 Clayton State 5-1 and will face Northwood (Mich.) today. On the other side of the bracket, No. 9 HPU defeated Concordia (N.Y.) 5-1 and will face California (Pa.) in the quarterfinals.

 

Men's teams fall

BYUH and HPU were eliminated from the Division II men's tennis tournament. BYUH lost to No. 11 Concordia 5-0 and HPU fell to Abeline Christian 5-4.

 

Conching honored

HPU's Lauren Conching was named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division II Women's Tennis National Assistant Coach of the Year yesterday.

Conching works with the Sea Warrior men's and women's teams and is in her fourth year with the program.

 

HPU leads All-PacWest team

Hawaii Pacific placed eight players on the All-PacWest baseball first team and Hawaii-Hilo's Keoni Manago shared Player of the Year honors, the league announced yesterday.

HPU's Garrett Yukumoto was named Coach of the Year after leading the Sea Warriors to the league title and a berth in the NCAA Division II tournament. Caelan O'Meara was named Pitcher of the Year. Michael Greene earned Newcomer of the Year honors, and Kale Sumner and UH-Hilo's Joshua Wong were co-Freshmen of the Year.

Representing HPU on the first team were Sumner, O'Meara, Sean Winston, Kenny Turner, Wade Tamaru, Blake Amaral, Bas Nooij and Danny March. Greene made the second team.

UH-Hilo placed Manago and Ronel Trias on the first team and Cody Barrett and Shane Kessel on the second team. Manago was named co-Player of the Year along with Dixie State's Brett Adams.

 

Musquiz named pitcher of the year

HPU senior Sherise Musquiz was named the PacWest softball Pitcher of the Year yesterday. Also earning league honors for the Sea Warriors were utility player Nicole Morrow (Freshman of the Year) and Bryan Nakasone (Coach of the Year).

HPU outfielder Ciera Senas, utility player Kozy Toriano and designated player Maile Kim and UH-Hilo pitcher Amber Waracka and flex player Christina Pedroza joined Musquiz on the All-PacWest first team.

HPU second baseman Casey Sugihara and flex player Ashley Valine, UH-Hilo third baseman Amanda Tellez and outfielder Sierra Green and Chaminade catcher Brandi Sasaki were named to the second team.
