Get your burger fix this month

It's National Hamburger Month and two eateries are celebrating.

» Kapahulu's Burgers on the Edge is holding its second annual Burger Genius contest.

In search of the next signature favorite, the eatery is asking for entries in three categories: beef (ground chuck or wagyu), turkey and veggie. Contestants may choose from the nine cheeses, 16 sauces and 20 toppings offered on the menu, or think outside the box. Each entry must be named and recipes must be provided.

Enter the contest online at http://www.BurgersOnTheEdge.com (video submission are welcome) or by visiting the restaurant at the Safeway Center in Kapahulu.

The contest runs through May 31, and six finalists will be entered in a sales contest. The entries (two per category) will go burger-to-burger; the winner will be decided by the highest sales in the month of June. (A portion of proceeds will benefit Hawaii Foodbank.) One winner in each category will be announced on July 7, the anniversary week of Burgers on the Edge, at 9 p.m. on KHON/Fox.

Winners will receive $200 cash and burgers for a year.

» Wolfgang's Steakhouse is commemorating Hamburger Month with a special $10 prime hamburger lunch combo, valued at $19.

Through May 31, during lunch hours of 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., sink your teeth into Wolfgang's half-pound classic prime sirloin hamburger on a fresh-baked sesame seed bun, with tomato, onion and lettuce, an option of American cheese, steak fries and onion rings, and a complimentary soft drink.

Contemporary spin on classics

“;Back to the Future”; is the theme of the third annual Hawaii Food & Wine Paradise gourmand festival May 27-29.

The festival will be housed at various locales of the Ko Olina Resort and in Waikiki, where top local chefs will take culinary classics and reinterpret them using contemporary ingredients.

Well-known Napa Valley winemakers and winery owners will present selections of some of their finest vintages to pair with dishes.

This year's festivities kick off with a party on May 27, “;E Komo Mai at the beachhouse”; at the Westin Moana Surfrider. The hotel also will host a gala May 28 that includes a fashion show by designer Anne Namba.

On May 29 the festival brings back the popular “;Pairings in Paradise”; panel at Ko Olina Beach Club. The weekend experience draws to a close with a barbecue at nearby Paradise Cove, complete with a fashion show.
