Sen. Akaka wants 'honest brokers'

U.S. Sens. Daniel Akaka and Robert Menendez, D-N.J., have offered what they call “;an honest broker amendment”; to the Wall Street reform bill.

It would require financial professionals to act in the best interests of their clients by imposing fiduciary duties on brokers.

Akaka said there are too many examples of brokers profiting from pushing inappropriate but higher-commission products.

The Hawaii Democrat said last week that the amendment would bring accountability to brokers by creating a legal obligation to put their clients' well-being before their own. He said investors must know their broker is acting in their best interests.

Isle doctors lack facts on drug costs

A study of Hawaii physicians has concluded there is only a modest association between their use of Internet technology and better knowledge of drug costs.

The study involved a survey of 247 primary care physicians throughout the islands in 2007.

It found eight in 10 doctors regularly used Internet technology in clinical care, but fewer than one in five often knew drug costs when prescribing medication.

The study was published electronically last month by the American Journal of Managed Care.

One of the authors of the study was Dr. Chien-Wen Tseng, an associate professor at the University of Hawaii's John A. Burns School of Medicine.
