A European view of social media for local marketers

Local marketing, public relations and advertising professionals can get a rare glimpse Friday into the European way of looking at social media practices by attending the monthly meeting of Social Media Club Hawaii.

Frank Hamm has surveyed some 300 PR practitioners across Europe to learn about their use of and discern their attitudes toward social media, and will share his findings with local social media users, according to club co-founder Roxanne Darling.

As thinking out-of-the-box (in other words, being creative) is a popular buzz phrase in the marketing, public relations and advertising professions, learning some European thought processes regarding the use of social media in the line of duty could be enlightening.

Hamm and his wife are traveling Hawaii for a month and created a social media campaign to connect with local residents and share his travels. As part of it, Frank and Manuela Hamm's Twitter handle is @hawaiitwentyten and they use the social media network to post short updates on their travels in 140 characters or less. They are quite adept at using U.S. Twitter lingo.

Mrs. Hamm Tweets mostly in German in her personal Twitter account, while Frank Tweets are bilingual.

The Hamms are posting pictures on their blog, including a transcendent shot inside Ken's Pancake House in Hilo. One can almost smell the ginormous loco mocos and specialty omelets.

The Hamms will have met local Twitter users at so-called Tweetups on Kauai, the Big Island and Maui by the time the appear at ING DIRECT Cafe from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Friday.

SMCH meetings are free and attendees are encouraged to bring business cards for networking. People who wish not to be photographed or have their presence noted on social media sites should let organizers know before the event begins. Valet parking is available, while self-parking is free.
