POSTED: Friday, May 07, 2010

DO SOMETHING different for Mother's Day this year and make mom laugh at “;Capone's Mother's Day Comedy Smash.”;

Former “;Saturday Night Live”; star Tracy Morgan will travel to Honolulu to make his Hawaii stage debut as the headlining act, with additional appearances by Lavell Crawford and Jeremiah “;J.J.”; Williamson. Doors open at 7 p.m. tomorrow at the Blaisdell Arena, with the stand-up getting started around 8 p.m.

Morgan, who stars in NBC's “;30 Rock,”; also enjoys success as a movie star, appearing recently alongside Chris Rock, Martin Lawrence, Danny Glover and Luke Wilson in the 2010 remake of “;Death at a Funeral.”; The 41-year old also released an autobiography, “;I Am the New Black,”; last year.

St. Louis-born Crawford is best known for his appearance on NBC's “;Last Comic Standing,”; with more recent appearances on Comedy Central and E! Network's “;Chelsea Lately.”; Williamson makes his return to Honolulu after getting rave reviews for his opening set at last year's Cedric the Entertainer show at Pipeline Cafe.

; Tickets for the “;Comedy Smash”; are priced at $45, $75 and $100, with $125 VIP seats also available. Call 306-2926 to order by phone.

If local entertainment is more mom's speed, reservations are still available for “;Mother's Day Lunch with the Stars”; at the Hawaii Okinawa Center. HPE Live presents the third annual event, which starts at noon Sunday and features performances by Melveen Leed, Sean Naauao, Kapena, Da Bruddahs and Jasmine Trias.

BUZZKILL AT THE SHELL: Some disturbing developments at the Waikiki Shell in recent weeks—according to news reports, the Honolulu Police Department made numerous arrests at this year's Kokua Festival and last weekend's ”;Jammin' Hawaiians”; concerts for possession of marijuana.

By itself, I've got no problem with Honolulu's finest doing their jobs and arresting those who are breaking the law. But some of the stories I've heard include tales of police stings taking place both inside and outside the venue. Unless people are complaining, why go inside the Shell and actively try to hunt for violations?

If people complain about the sticky smoke, then by all means, call the cops and have something done about the situation. But sending undercover officers into a crowd to go fishing for law-breakers isn't a good look; increased DUI enforcement after the concerts end and/or focusing on more pressing police issues elsewhere in Waikiki seem like better ideas to me ...

WEDNESDAYS ARE shaping up to be one of the more popular nights in Chinatown again, with enough parties on tap to attract crowds similar to those that showed up four or five years ago.

While it got its start at NextDoor, ”;Acid Wash Wednesdays”; now enjoys a strong following at SoHo Mixed Media Bar after a short stint at the now-defunct Living Room last year. It's now reclaimed its place as the biggest party in Chinatown on a Wednesday, thanks to the spacious confines of SoHo and the talented turntable abilities of DJ Vegas Mike and friends.

But as the old saying goes, “;A rising tide lifts all ships,”; and that's what could happen as people discover the new parties at Manifest and back at NextDoor.

After stumbling out of the gates in February, ”;Broadcast”; is shaping up to be a nice weekly showcase of Honolulu's up-and-coming talent. Clones of the Queen, GRLFRNDS, the Prolific Unknowns and even Zion I have performed at NextDoor recently, and May 19's appearance by Maui's the Throwdowns is a can't-miss event.

Across the street at Manifest, ”;The Get Right”; has moved from Thursdays to Wednesdays. DJ Delve is the resident DJ at this party, which is supposedly one of the best options for those who want to dance the night away to good music.

There is no cover for both “;Acid Wash Wednesdays”; and “;The Get Right,”; as long as you're 21 years of age; 19- and 20-year-olds are welcome at “;Broadcast,”; with a $7 cover ($5 for those 21 and over) after 10 p.m. Get there between 9 and 10 p.m., however, and you'll get in free ...
