Kua in fourth at WAC golf

Hawaii sophomore T.J. Kua shot a second consecutive 69 and was alone in fourth place heading into today's final round of the Western Athletic Conference men's golf championship in Henderson, Nev.

Kua was at 138, sixth strokes behind leader Timothy Madigan of New Mexico State at the Rio Secco Golf Club.

The Rainbow Warriors remained in last place in the nine-team event, their 600 well behind leader New Mexico State at 557. Host Nevada was four strokes back at 561.

Golfer DePalma signs with UH

Anna DePalma, a four-time all-league selection at San Clemente (Calif.) High, has signed a letter of intent to play for Hawaii.

DePalma, a three-year captain for the Tritons, won the CIF southern section championship this past season. She joins Mililani High's Maryssa Shigesato and Sweden's Madeleine Ystrom in coach Lori Castillo's recruiting class.

Warriors face Waves in tennis

Hawaii will open the NCAA Division I men's tennis championships May 15 against Pepperdine in a subregional hosted by No. 8 seed Stanford.

The Rainbow Warriors (12-7), ranked 37th, face the No. 21 Waves (16-10) for the second time in three NCAA postseason appearances. Hawaii lost to Pepperdine in the first round in 2008. Hawaii lost in the second round last year to UCLA.

Top HPU awards to soccer players

Hawaii Pacific sophomore soccer players Isaiah Guth and Katrina Torres were the recipients of the inaugural Martin and Illie Anderson Endowed Award for Scholar Athletes at Monday's athletic banquet.

The award, established by HPU trustee and former Stanford athlete Martin Anderson, will be given to the Sea Warriors exhibiting a combination of leadership, athletic performance, sportsmanship and academic achievement.

Also, senior shortstop Kenny Turner was named the top male and senior pitcher Sherise Musquiz the top female athletes of the year. The scholar-athlete awards went to cross country runner Kevin Enriques and Zora Vickova of women's tennis.
