3-day festival celebrates Molokai as hula's birthplace

The 19th annual Ka Hula Piko Festival takes place on Molokai from May 13 to 15.

The three-day festival celebrates Molokai as the birthplace of hula and pays homage to Laka. It was founded by the late kumu hula John Ka'imikaua, Halau Hula o Kukunaokala and the Molokai community host the festival as an educational and cultural event.

The festival will be held at the Mitchell Pau'ole Center in Kaunakakai. Besides lectures, there will be on-site excursions and a hoolaulea featuring Hawaiian food and handmade crafts. Admission is free. Call the Molokai Visitors Association at 553-5221.

'Lost' creators to discuss finale

With the finale of “;Lost”; approaching May 23 with a special two-hour episode, the popular drama will be the subject of the next “;Times Talk Live”; series showing May 20 in select theaters nationwide.

An interview with creators and executive producers Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof will be screened at 8 p.m. at the Regal Dole Cannery Stadium 18. New York Times entertainment editor Lorne Manly will talk to the duo about the challenges of crafting a finale that satisfies themselves and fans.

93 youths picked for Olelo videos

Ninety-three finalists have been selected from 575 entries throughout Hawaii schools for the seventh annual Olelo Youth Xchange Video competition.

The finalists come from both public and private schools on the four major isles, comprising a record number of entries this year.

The competition has five broad categories, including public service announcement, news, short, animation and minidocumentary, in addition to five sponsored categories, which include global warming, HI-5 recycling, peacemaker, start living healthy and traffic safety. The three age divisions include elementary, intermediate and high school.

Winners will be selected by a panel of local news media and filmmaking professionals and announced at an awards banquet on May 17 at the JW Marriott Ihilani Resort & Spa at Ko Olina. Awards include Sony video cameras to winning schools.

'Toy' screening to aid orphans

An early screening of “;Toy Story 3”; on May 16, one month prior to its release date, will serve as a fundraiser for orphans.

The much-anticipated Pixar film will show at Ward Theatres, with 100 percent of proceeds going to the Children of Future Light Orphanage in Cambodia and Email Foster Parents International. In addition to the film, a new Pixar short will screen, and a Khmer dance will be presented.

Part-time Kailua resident Ed Catmull, a two-time Academy Award winner and president of Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios, is behind the effort. Catmull will introduce the film at the fundraiser.

Admission runs $125 to $200, which includes an after-party at Dave & Buster's, with pupus, cocktails, access to electronic games and special Pixar collector gift items. Call 545-3676.
