Libraries and stores offer free comic books

May 1 is more than just Lei Day in Hawaii this year. It's also Free Comic Book Day, held annually on the first Saturday of May.

Movie-related titles, such as “;Spider-Man”; in years past, have been showcased, and this year is no different. With “;Iron Man 2,”; “;Shrek Forever After”; and “;Toy Story 3,”; the big movies coming to theaters in the weeks and months ahead, “;Iron Man/Thor,”; “;Shrek & the Penguins”; and “;Toy Story”; comic books will be available while copies last.

With a valid Hawaii State Public Library System card, free comic books will be available at library branches in Aiea (483-7333), Aina Haina (377-2456), Hawaii Kai (397-5833), Kailua (266-9911), Kapolei (693-7050), Liliha (587-7577), McCully-Moiliili (973-1099), Mililani (627-7470) and Lahaina (662-3950).

Participating retailers include Collector Maniacs (3571 Waialae Ave., 739-3912), Gecko Books & Comics (1151 12th Ave., 732-1292), Jelly's the Original (98-023 Hekaha St., 484-4413) and Other Realms (Ward Warehouse, 596-8236).
