Bulldogs batter 'Bows' bullpen to even series at 1 apiece

Jeff Van Doornum and David Freitas provided the pop once again, but this time, they had no help.

Both homered for the second straight game, but they were only solo shots, as Hawaii was held to eight hits in a 9-5 loss to Louisiana Tech yesterday at J.C. Love Field in Ruston, La.

Trevor Petersen (5-4) pitched a complete game for Louisiana Tech (20-17, 5-5 Western Athletic Conference), which pulled away with five runs off the Rainbows bullpen to snap a three-game losing streak.

Chase Koissian went 2-for-5 with an RBI in the leadoff spot and Van Doornum was 2-for-4 with two runs scored for the Rainbows (20-19, 3-7).

Hawaii trailed 4-3 when LaTech sealed the game with two runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh.

Reliever Jesse Moore walked Will Alvis to start the sixth and Taylor Terrasas hit an RBI double down the left-field line to chase Moore.

Blair Walters replaced Moore and gave up an RBI single to Kyle Roliard. Then, with two outs in the seventh, Walters hit Clint Ewing with a pitch and surrendered a two-run homer to Alvis to put the Bulldogs up 8-3.

“;Don't get me wrong, I'm hard on my pitchers even though we lead the WAC in pitching by a lot, but we cannot afford to go out there and pitch like we did,”; Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso said.

“;You can't go out there and walk a leadoff guy when you're only down a run. You can't hit a guy on a 1-2 count and then on an 0-2 pitch when we call for a ball nowhere close to the strike zone we throw one belt high down the middle for a home run.”;

Although the bullpen allowed five runs, the loss was charged to starter Sam Spangler (2-6), who gave up eight hits and four runs. He was pulled for a reliever after allowing a single and a double to start the fifth.

“;I knew what I was going to get out of Sam,”; Trapasso said. “;He's going to fight and scratch and claw like he always does, but he just didn't have his command in the zone today. If I leave him in, we were going to get one run here, two runs there and by the time he got to seven innings and 100 pitches, he would have allowed seven or eight runs, so we go to the 'pen.”;

Hawaii is 1-13 this season when allowing more than six runs. Van Doornum's team-leading seventh homer of the season got the Rainbows to within one at 4-3, but Alvis' two-run homer in the seventh pushed the Bulldogs over that magical number of six.

Trapasso said either Alex Capaul or Matt Sisto would start today's game beginning at 10 a.m. The four-game series wraps up tomorrow.
