BYUH offers scholarship to Akina

Kahuku guard Nehoa Akina has a scholarship offer to play basketball at Brigham Young-Hawaii.

Akina, one of the state's top shooters during a four-year varsity career at Mililani and Kahuku, could follow a line of former college athletes from his family. Brothers Kawika (Northern Arizona) and Alan (BYUH) played basketball, and Kaihe was a track athlete at Southern Utah.

Their father, Hiram, played basketball at BYUH.

Elite teams visit Punahou

Boys volleyball fans who didn't get their fill at last week's Hawaii Invitational can get a little more mainland flavor.

Punahou's Clash of the Titans is set for next Thursday and Friday.

The Buffanblu, ranked No. 1 in ESPN Rise's Fab 10, will face No. 31 Newport Harbor (Calif.).

Hawaii Baptist, ranked fourth in the Star-Bulletin Boys Volleyball Top 10, will battle Corona del Mar (Calif.), the No. 29 squad in the nation.

The Eagles, the two-time defending state champions in Division II, are 17th in the ESPN national rankings.

The two-day tournament concludes with HBA-Newport Harbor and Punahou-Corona del Mar matches.

Match times at Hemmeter Fieldhouse are 5 and 7 p.m. each day.
