Chew silences Kamehameha

By

POSTED: Sunday, March 21, 2010

The Mid-Pacific Owls are giving the rest of the Interscholastic League more to chew on.

Junior Lawrence Chew stepped up for his longest stint of the season, allowing just four hits in six innings as the ninth-ranked Owls stifled No. 8 Kamehameha 13-6 last night at Ala Wai Field.

Chew, a 6-foot, 190-pound right-hander, allowed just two earned runs, struck out six and walked three for his second win of the season. MPI improved to 3-1 in league play, while Kamehameha dropped to 2-3-1.

Catcher Dane Fujinaka led the Owls' 15-hit attack with a 4-for-5 effort, including two doubles and three RBIs.

Jacob Meyer went 3-for-3 with a home run, double and a pair of RBIs to lead the Warriors.

The momentum began, though, with Chew.

“;He was throwing a lot of strikes and getting ahead,”; said Fujinaka, who made all the calls behind home plate.

“;My arm felt good warming up. I was hitting the glove every time,”; said Chew, who relied on his fastball and changeup. I was throwing the changeup when I was behind. I just listened to Dane.”;

Chew outlasted Bryson “;Burger”; Kenolio, who started for Kamehameha and went five innings.

“;He beat us two, three times last year,”; MPI coach Dunn Muramaru recalled. “;He mixes his speeds and his changeup well. We got lucky. The ball here bounces any kind of way.”;

The teams combined for 11 errors, but the biggest defensive play went the Owls' way in the fifth.

Kamehameha had the bases loaded and just one out, but Kenolio struck out and Kash Kalohelani's hard grounder up the middle was speared by Owls second baseman Tyler Yoshizawa, who flipped the ball to shortstop Justin Protacio for an inning-ending force out.

“;In a tight situation, we have to get that ground ball, make that good pitch,”; Fujinaka said.

The lead switched hands the first couple of innings. Mid-Pacific went up 1-0 in the top of the first on Ryan Muraoka's single to right, scoring Protacio.

Jacob Meyer answered for the Warriors with a sky-high two-run homer in the bottom of the first.

An oddball play came in the top of the second, shortly after MPI's Fujinaka doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Nishimoto.

An errant pickoff throw by Kenolio allowed baserunner Jordan Obata to advance to third. On the play, the throw by first baseman Kewby Meyer sailed high, and Obata raced around third to score.

The Warriors scratched out two runs with two outs left in the top of the third, benefiting from a throwing error by Owls left fielder Nishimoto. With runners on third and second, a passed ball by Fujinaka allowed Kainoa Inafuku to score from third.

Kewby Meyer's RBI single scored Jacob Meyer and brought Kamehameha within 5-4.

The Owls tacked on three runs in the top of the fifth frame. Consecutive singles by Fujinaka, Obata and Nishimoto produced the first run. A throwing error by Kamehameha catcher Preston Hao on a steal by Nishimoto allowed Obata to score from third, and Justin Matoi's infield single brought home Nishimoto to give the Owls an 8-4 lead.

After stopping Kamehameha in the fifth, the Owls scored two more runs in the sixth. Muraoka's solo shot to left was followed a walk and two stolen bases by Marcus Doi, who scored on a single by Obata for a 10-4 lead.

A two-run single by Fujinaka gave MPI an eight-run lead in the top of the seventh, and an infield error—Kamehameha's sixth—permitted the final Owls run.

MPI's next game is on Monday when Damien, a make-up of a rainout game last week.
