Easton Torigoe's first hit of the season was as big as it gets.

The sophomore first baseman hit a grand slam and Collin Bennett homered and scored three times to propel Hawaii to a 15-6 victory over Air Force last night in the first of a four-game series.

Torigoe's slam woke up a Les Murakami Stadium crowd of 1,660 that had seen Hawaii (8-9) hit into two double plays and squander multiple run-scoring chances.

That all changed on one swing, as Torigoe sent a two-out shot over the wall in right field in the fifth to give Hawaii its first lead of the game.

The Rainbows scored 12 consecutive runs after the Falcons (5-13) took a 4-1 lead.

Torigoe's slam was just the third hit of his career and fifth plate appearance of the season. He was in the game as a replacement for Kevin Macdonald, who left after the end of the second inning.

Macdonald had his foot stepped on by Garrett Custons, who beat out a bunt down the third-base line in the first. Custons went sprawling after touching the base and Macdonald limped around the infield, but toughed it out long enough to help get UH on the board.

He singled with one out in the bottom of the second to move Bennett to third. Bennett then scored on a hit by Jeff Van Doornum to pull Hawaii within a run.

Air Force took the early 2-0 lead in the first inning after the first three batters reached base. Hawaii starter Sam Spangler struggled with his command, walking a batter and allowing two singles to load the bases. A sacrifice fly scored one run and Spangler was called for a balk with two outs to score another, but kept the damage at a minimum.

Custons led off the third with a single and scored on a two-out hit by Matt Alexander to push the Falcons' lead back to two.

Air Force led 4-1 in the fifth inning when Torigoe's slam capped a five-run fifth inning.

Freshman Kalani Brackenridge opened things with a leadoff double. Breland Almadova drew his second walk to put men on first and second and Greg Garcia moved the runners up with a successful sacrifice bunt.

The Falcons decided to intentionally walk Kolten Wong to load the bases for David Freitas, whose sacrifice fly to right scored Brackenridge. Bennett was then hit by a pitch, setting the stage for Torigoe to clear the bases with a home run off reliever Alex Baker.

It made a winner out of Spangler (2-3), who struggled through five innings, allowing four runs on five hits with three walks and six strikeouts.

Baker (0-3) took the loss for the Falcons, allowing two runs on three hits in 1 1/3 innings.

Air Force was still within shouting distance until Bennett launched a two-run homer over the wall in center to double UH's lead to 8-4. Freitas worked a one-out walk to set the stage for Bennett, who tagged an 0-1 offering from Steve Colangelo for his second home run of the season.

Hawaii tacked on five more runs in the inning, including three on a bases-clearing double by Wong, for its highest-scoring inning of the season.

Brackenridge finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored for Hawaii. Custons and Blair Roberts had two hits and scored two runs apiece to lead the Falcons.

Jesse Moore allowed two runs on two hits over the final four innings to earn the save.

Hawaii's Josh Slaats (1-0, 0.52) is expected to start tonight opposite Air Force's Alex Truesdale (1-2, 7.96). Hawaii is slated to go with Alex Capaul (3-1, 3.68) tomorrow and Matt Sisto (1-3, 8.10) on Monday.
