Cooking accident starts blaze at Ward Centre cafe

About 30 firefighters responded to a kitchen fire at Mocha Java Cafe in Ward Centre yesterday afternoon.

No one was injured in the fire, which was accidentally caused by a saute pan flare-up.

The fire caused an estimated $5,000 in damage to the kitchen and its contents.

Employees in the section of Mocha Java had self-evacuated by the time firefighters arrived at 12:41 p.m., said fire Capt. Terry Seelig.

The fire was reported under control at 12:59 p.m. and extinguished shortly after 1:30 p.m.

 

Big Island motorcyclist killed in crash is identified

Big Island police have identified the 36-year-old Waikoloa man who was killed Friday morning when he was thrown from his motorcycle as David K. Waipa.

The accident occurred before 1 a.m. on Honokohau Road in Kailua-Kona. Waipa was driving a 2001 Suzuki motorcycle and traveling west when he struck the curb on the right side of the road and was thrown from the motorcycle. He was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where he died at 1:30 a.m. He was not wearing a helmet.

Police said speed and alcohol were factors in this crash.

This is the eighth traffic fatality on the Big Island this year, compared with four at this time last year.

 

Teen reports sex assault by 2 boys in Ewa Beach

Police are investigating a report of two teens allegedly sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl in Ewa Beach.

Police said the girl reported she was sexually assaulted between 7 p.m. Friday and 5 a.m. Saturday by a 17-year-old boy and a 16-year-old boy she recently met.

The sexual assault allegedly occurred in a residential area of Ewa Beach.

No arrests had been made as of Monday. The case, classified as two counts of first-degree sexual assault, is pending a sexual abuse treatment center examination and forensic interview.

 

Man dies after his arrest for violation of warnings

A 46-year-old Ewa Beach man died Sunday night after being arrested for allegedly violating a 24-hour warning to remain away from another person.

The Honolulu Medical Examiner's Office identified the man as George Kuriyama Jr.

The cause of death is pending the outcome of further tests by the Medical Examiner's Office.

Kuriyama was arrested for the 24-hour warning violation.

Police noticed he was having difficulty breathing, so he was taken to Hawaii Medical Center West, where he died at 7:14 p.m. Sunday.

Police Internal Affairs is investigating the incident.

 

2 male suspects wanted for robbery using stun gun

Police are looking for two men who robbed a 22-year-old man Sunday with a stun gun at Mililani Town Center.

The victim passed an unknown Nissan vehicle in the parking lot at about 1:20 a.m. when the driver got out and demanded money, police said.

The victim refused, but a man in the rear passenger seat showed him a stun gun and activated it, producing sparks, police said. The victim gave the driver $10 and his backpack, and the suspects drove off.

 

Man arrested for allegedly molesting 2-year-old girl

Police released a 28-year-old Kaimuki man yesterday who was accused of sexually assaulting a 2-year-old girl.

Police arrested the man at 5:30 p.m. Saturday near Ala Moana Park after the girl's family reported the man allegedly lured her into a restroom and molested her.

The girl was with her family at the park for a party.

The man was released on the sexual assault offense pending further investigation.

He was also arrested for probation violation and investigation of drug and contempt offenses.
