Hawaii pitchers hold Oregon at bay with 4-hitter

The only people capable of stopping Hawaii's pitching staff last night were the pitchers themselves.

Matt Sisto, Alex Capaul and Lenny Linsky combined on a four-hitter and Breland Almadova hit his first collegiate home run to lead the Rainbows to a 2-1 victory in front of a Les Murakami Stadium crowd of 2,075.

Greg Garcia broke a 1-for-17 slump with a run-scoring double in the third and Collin Bennett had two hits for the Rainbows (3-3), who took a 2-0 series lead against the Ducks (3-3) on the strength of their pitching.

“;When they come out and hold you to two runs, you're either lucky or you got great pitching and probably tonight was a little bit of both,”; Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso said. “;We made some big pitches, got a quality start out of Sisto, I thought Capaul was outstanding and Lenny went out and got the job done.”;

Oregon's only run came on a three-base throwing error by Sisto, who overthrew Kevin Macdonald at first trying to throw out KC Serna with two outs. The error allowed Curtis Raulinaitis to score from first base for Oregon's only run of the game.

“;Just got it and the ball took off and sailed,”; said Sisto, who allowed just three hits and the unearned run in six innings with three walks and a strikeout. “;Changeup was off and curveball was not there either, but just threw strikes and got a lot of outs.”;

Linsky, who recorded his second save in as many nights, allowed a leadoff single to start the ninth. After a sacrifice bunt moved pinch runner Jett Hart to second, Linsky got Eddie Rodriguez to groundout to third on the first pitch he saw and Danny Pulfer to ground out to the pitcher to end the game.

“;He gave up the leadoff hit, but after the bunt got two ground balls, which is what he does,”; Trapasso said.

Almadova led off the game with his first home run of the season, driving a 2-2 pitch just over the wall and to the left of the foul pole in right field.

After Oregon tied it in the top of third, the Rainbows answered in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead on Garcia's double. Sean Montplaisir singled with one out and advanced to second on a bunt by Alamadova, setting the stage for Garcia, who ripped a hit into the gap for the eventual game-winning run.

“;For him to come up with a hit like that was big for him because he's been struggling,”; Trapasso said.

Sisto fatigued in the sixth, giving up a two-out double to Jack Marder off the wall in left and a four-pitch walk to Ryan Hambright that brought a visit to the mound from Trapasso. After settling down, Sisto got Rodriguez to ground into a fielder's choice to end his day after 85 pitches.

“;I wasn't really worried,”; Sisto said. “;The guy on deck (Rodriguez) was 0-for-the-series, so I wasn't really worried.”;

Hawaii will try to climb above the .500 mark today as Josh Slaats (0-0, 0.00 ERA) takes the mound opposing Oregon's Christian Jones (0-1, 8.10) at 1:05 p.m.
