Groovy recipes celebrate MVT's staging of 'Hair'

“;Hair,”; the Tony Award-winning rock musical that defined the “;Age of Aquarius,”; takes the Manoa Valley Theatre stage March 4-21.

Following a group of young Americans searching for love and peace during the Vietnam era, the 1968 Broadway hit is a timeless portrait of a movement that changed the world.

GROOVY BROWNIES

1/2 cup butter
2 squares (1 ounce each) semisweet chocolate
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup flour
Optional add-ins: 1/2 cup chopped nuts, 1 cup chocolate chips, 1 cup M&M chocolate candies, 1 cup Reese's pieces, etc.
1 cup miniature marshmallows
» Chocolate frosting:

1 cup sugar
1/2 cup butter
1/4 cup milk
1 cup chocolate chips
1 teaspoon vanilla

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour 8-by-8-inch baking pan.

In small saucepan, melt butter and chocolate over low heat; set aside to cool.

In small bowl, beat eggs and vanilla; add sugar gradually. Mix in chocolate mixture and flour. Stir in optional add-ins.

Pour into prepared pan; bake approximately 30 to 40 minutes.

While brownies are still hot, spread miniature marshmallows over top; cool.

To make frosting, place sugar, butter and milk into saucepan and bring to boil; boil for 1 minute then remove from heat. Add chocolate chips and vanilla, and beat until smooth.

Frost cupcakes. Serves 9.

Note: Double this recipe for 9-by-13-inch pan.

'PURPLE HAZE' PUNCH

1 can (12 ounces) frozen grape juice concentrate, thawed
1 can (12 ounces) frozen cranberry juice concentrate, thawed
1 liter bottle sparkling wine
2 liter bottles lemon-lime soda

Mix all ingredients together; chill. Makes about 15 (8 ounces each) servings.
