UH ends tourney with a victory

The Rainbow Wahine softball team came from behind to top the Titans of Cal State Fullerton, 12-3, on the last day of the Louisville-Slugger Desert Classic.

Freshman Kaia Parnaby picked up the win by pitching a complete-game six-hitter with five strikeouts.

Hawaii fell behind early, giving up three runs in the first inning but put up nine runs in the last two innings, capped off by Traci Yoshikawa's grand slam in the top of the seventh to secure the victory and help the Rainbow Wahine improve to 7-3 for the season.

 

BYUH's Whippy honored

Brigham Young-Hawaii junior guard Marques Whippy was selected the PacWest men's basketball player of the week. Whippy averaged 13.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, 5 steals, 3 assists and 1.5 blocks while guiding the Seasiders to a 2-0 mark during the week.

 

Low wins Hilo Invitational

Professional Jacob Low won the 13th annual Hilo Invitational Pro-Am & Golf Tournament with a 5-under 137 at the Hilo Municipal Golf Course.

Chris Igawa took home the low amateur honors with a 2-under 140. Igawa defeated fellow amateurs Alika Bell and Hawaii-Hilo Vulcan golfer Niel Cabico in a two-hole sudden-death playoff for the low amateur honors.

 

Atkinson resigns as UH-Hilo coach

University of Hawaii at Hilo women's volleyball coach Bruce Atkinson announced that he will step down effective tomorrow.

Atkinson spent three years with the Vulcans, winning two PacWest coach of the year awards and compiling a 69-13 record.
