More than 21,000 participants completed the Kaiser Permanente Great Aloha Run on Oahu yesterday—plus 1,600 in Afghanistan and Iraq.

There were 21,142 runners, walkers, strollers and wheelchair participants who started the 8.15-mile course at Aloha Tower. Of those, 21,073 crossed the finish line at Aloha Stadium.

Five hundred participants in Iraq and 1,100 in Afghanistan completed their own 8.15-mile courses yesterday. Thirty of yesterday's volunteers completed the Aloha Tower-to-Aloha Stadium course two weeks ago.

The number of participants who signed up for yesterday's event, 24,683, was the highest in 10 years, event officials said.

Last year's Great Aloha Run raised more than $400,000 for charities.

Event officials say there is no one reason for the increase in participants.
