Thirteen-year-old Gina McGuire was recognized by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Marine Debris Program.

The Kamehameha Schools Hawaii Middle School eighth-grader last year participated in “;It's a Honu World,”; an art exhibit to benefit the Big Island.

She decorated a ceramic sea turtle with painted scenes of the Hawaiian monk seal and humpback whale—a work auctioned off for $400.

The sale of her turtle and funds she raised through a Gina McGuire Hero Fund, set up for her by the Honu World project, totaled $875 donated to the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation's Marine Debris Campaign.

“;Shining Stars”; runs Sunday.
