Farrington grabs OIA

All guts, all glory for the Farrington Governors.

Brydgette Tatupu-Leopoldo scored 23 points, sealing the game with two foul shots with 7.5 seconds left, as Farrington escaped with a 48-45 win over Roosevelt to capture the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red Conference girls basketball crown.

Fourth-ranked Farrington (21-4, 15-1) will draw a first-round bye in the state tourney, which tips off next week. Roosevelt, which already had a loss in the double-elimination OIA playoffs, could have forced a final-game rematch with Farrington by winning. The hustling Rough Riders overcame a nine-point second-half deficit only to lose in the final minute.

“;We had to be a little more patient and play our game,”; Farrington coach Caroline Tatupu said of her team's start. “;Our girls didn't give up. They never give up no matter what the score was. They played with heart.”;

Seventh-ranked Roosevelt (17-5, 14-3) had already clinched a state-tourney berth. Kelcie Namba led the way with 17 points.

Roosevelt's comeback brought the crowd of 800 fans at Mililani's gym to high-decibel levels. Nicole Ramirez's drive for a bucket cut the lead to one point, and Namba turned a steal into two foul shots to give Roosevelt a 45-44 lead with 46 seconds left.

Moments later, Kirsten Liana scored in the low post and Farrington led 46-45 with 35 seconds to go. After a Roosevelt turnover, Tatupu-Leopoldo missed the front end of a 1-and-1, giving the Rough Riders hope.

“;My mind was blank when I was shooting,”; said Tatupu-Leopoldo, who shot 7-for-8 from the field, and also had six boards and four steals. “;I had to refocus and regain my confidence again.”;

However, Namba missed two free-throw tries with 8 seconds left, and Tatupu-Leopoldo redeemed herself with two swishes from the foul line with 7.5 seconds remaining for a 48-45 Govs' lead.

Ramirez's 24-foot 3-point try at the buzzer rimmed out.

“;The play was set up for me. I had a good look,”; said Ramirez, who finished with 12 points. “;We played great. Congratulations to Farrington.”;

It was a third close loss to the Govs in three matchups for Roosevelt; all three games were decided by four points or less. A fourth game was forfeited in mid-January by Farrington and not played.

Roosevelt came out firing and had an 11-4 lead. Farrington used size mismatches against Roosevelt's four-guard attack, getting Tatupu-Leopoldo and Kirsten Liana on the low post for buckets and extra passes. That helped the Govs roar ahead; they led 42-33 early in the fourth quarter.
