Attorney Christopher Chun has been hired to become the new executive director of the Hawaii High School Athletic Association.

HHSAA president Meredith Maeda confirmed the news yesterday after Chun signed a contract. Chun succeeds Keith Amemiya, who was also a practicing attorney before joining the HHSAA 11 years ago.

“;He really wants what's good for student-athletes,”; Maeda said of Chun. “;He's a former athlete and he's involved with athletics through his kids.”;

Chun was one of three finalists for the job. Amemiya announced his departure in November and later was hired by the University of Hawaii and the Board of Regents.

That hastened the search to a degree. Chun will begin at his new job on March 6.

“;It's a tough job, especially in the economic climate we have now, and coming in between winter and spring seasons,”; former HHSAA chief Dwight Toyama said. “;Keith put the HHSAA on the map. He did a great job.”;

Toyama was not part of the selection committee. As head of the Oahu Interscholastic Association, he's ready to give Chun any and all assistance possible.

“;He'll have the full support of all the leagues,”; Toyama said.
