Homeless man arrested in alleged knife assault

Police arrested a 36-year-old homeless man Tuesday night for allegedly using a knife to slash two men, age 19 and 21, in downtown Honolulu.

Police said the two men saw the suspect arguing with his girlfriend near a parking lot entrance.

The men walked over to the arguing couple and tried to mediate, police said. As the men approached, the 36-year-old man pulled out a knife and started slashing at the two younger men, who received large cuts to the body.

Police officers patrolling the area responded quickly, and arrested the suspect at Maunakea and North Beretania streets on suspicion of two counts of first-degree assault.

Surveillance leads to bust of ID theft ring

Police busted an alleged identity theft ring in Kaneohe on Tuesday afternoon.

Windward detectives and Crime Reduction Unit officers had been conducting surveillance of a Kaneohe house where items were allegedly being purchased over the Internet with illegally obtained credit cards using stolen personal information.

Police said the suspects had items mailed to a vacant residence in Kaneohe.

Seven people had their identities stolen after personal, confidential information was taken in an auto theft, police said.

Detectives were able to trace the computer being used to purchase the goods, and Crime Reduction Unit officers got a search warrant for the house.

Specialized Services Division officers executed a search warrant on the house at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. They found a variety of goods, including computers, allegedly purchased using stolen personal and confidential information. They also found methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.

Police arrested a 37-year-old woman and three men, age 39, 41 and 45, at 45-587 Duncan Drive on suspicion of unauthorized control of personal and confidential information.

An autopsy to determine the cause of death will be completed tomorrow.
