'Iolani boys get big win at Kamehameha

This time, the 'Iolani Raiders sealed off everything they could.
The result? A 67-63 victory at Kamehameha and an Interscholastic League of Honolulu boys basketball race that got much thicker.
Kainoa Chu led a balanced attack with 16 points as the third-ranked Raiders improved to 7-2 in the ILH, dropping Kamehameha (7-2) into a second-place tie behind Punahou.
“;For the seniors, if we lost the game, we wouldn't have a chance to win the ILH,”; Chu said of the win before about 1,000 fans at Kekuhaupi'o Gym. “;We stuck together and had our crowd supporting us in a hostile environment.”;
Unlike their previous meeting, when Kamehameha owned the boards 33-16, the Warriors had a smaller edge, 28-24. That included just two offensive boards in the second half.
'Iolani also took Kamehameha standout Micah Christenson out of his normal rhythm. Though the 6-foot-5 gunner finished with 22 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks, he had to fight to get open looks. John Foy, Gabriel Vega and Trevyn Tulonghari blanketed Christenson from start to finish, and he shot 8-for-17.
“;I feel like I got in his head,”; said Tulonghari, a 5-foot-11 junior. “;He got his shots off and made some. He's Micah.”;
He had just four offensive boards compared to the 20 rebounds and seven offensive caroms in a Kamehameha win on Jan. 12.
“;We can't sulk on it. Every game means something for the ILH (title),”; Christenson said. “;They came out playing real physical from the start.”;
Raiders coach Dean Shimamoto went to a platoon system, bringing four fresh players in midway through each quarter. The sub crew included Vega, a 6-5 junior, and Josiah Sukumaran (6-3).
Andrew Skalman and Tulonghari added 13 points each for 'Iolani (14-7 overall). 'Iolani shot 48 percent from the field (24-for-50) and committed only eight turnovers. Kamehameha was 42 percent (22-for-53) with 11 giveaways.
Charlton Tang added 17 points for Kamehameha (17-4 overall).

Kirsten Liana scored 13 of her game-high 18 points in the second half to rally the Governors past the Rough Riders into the final of the OIA Red tournament.
Nicole Ramirez scored eight of her team-high 16 points in the second quarter—draining two 3-pointers—to stake Roosevelt to a big first-half lead before the Govs stormed back after the break.
Farrington, undefeated in the double-elimination tournament, will face the winner of next Tuesday's game between Moanalua and Roosevelt.
