Donors pick favorites for governor

By

POSTED: Thursday, February 04, 2010

U.S. Rep. Neil Abercrombie appears to be the favored son of attorneys, while Mayor Mufi Hannemann is the big winner among engineers and heads of companies.

The third major candidate for governor, Republican Lt. Gov. James “;Duke”; Aiona, is getting help from state appointees and members of Gov. Linda Lingle's Cabinet, who donated $13,517 to Aiona's campaign.

The information is disclosed in spreadsheets filed with the Campaign Spending Commission that show the money collected during the last six months of 2009 in pursuit of the governorship.

Hannemann leads the trio with $2.3 million, Aiona is second with $2.2 million and Abercrombie picked up $1.3 million.

Buried inside the spreadsheets are some interesting details.

For instance, some high-profile donors are starting to pick their candidates.

Celebrity chef Roy Yamaguchi gave Hannemann $6,000, and Abercrombie matched it with $6,000 from celebrity hair stylist Paul Brown.

Others appear to be splitting their money. Rai St. Chu, the 2009 Hawaii State Bar Association president, gave Abercrombie $1,900 and her husband, Richard Turbin, who was the 2005 bar association president, gave Hannemann $1,000.

Lee Webber, the Honolulu Advertiser's president and publisher, gave Hannemann $1,000. And Keith Amemiya, who just left his high-profile job as head of the Hawaii High School Athletic Association to become interim secretary to the University of Hawaii Board of Regents, gave Hannemann $5,200.

Abercrombie reaped a $150 contribution from Kathryn Matayoshi, interim superintendent of education. He also collected $2,600 from former Gov. Ben Cayetano, $2,500 from City Councilwoman Ann Kobayashi and $2,130 from Frank Goto, the politically influential manager of the United Fishing Agency.

Hannemann's campaign is drawing the support of many who would benefit from the development of the city's rail transit system.

For instance, employees and officers with R.M. Towill Corp., one of the transit system contractors, gave Hannemann a total of $27,000 during this reporting period, according to the commission filing.

Finally, raising money is also an expensive matter for campaigns. The Aiona and Hannemann campaigns did not answer questions about how their candidates raise funds or if the candidates themselves make pitches for money. But a spokeswoman for the Abercrombie campaign acknowledged that Abercrombie is involved in asking for money.

Aiona, however, has hired Miriam Hellreich, the Hawaii GOP national committeewoman, to help raise money. She also served as a fundraiser for Gov. Linda Lingle.

In the last six months of 2009, Aiona paid Hellreich $41,820 to help raise money for the campaign. Hellreich did not respond to requests for comment.
