Always welcome

The popular television show “;Cheers”;—a sitcom about customers at a Boston watering hole who shared their lives and experiences with other regulars and bar employees—was a family favorite in my household throughout the 1980s and '90s.

In Honolulu, Kincaid's is a modern-day Cheers—without the cameras, of course. For a long time this place has been among the undisputed favorites of local residents, with the type of happy hour that makes it easy to classify it as your “;regular”; happy-hour spot.

When you walk into the Ward Warehouse restaurant for happy hour, there are a variety of seating options. I recommend sitting at the bar, as the bartenders are friendly and welcoming and the surrounding conversations are always interesting. The atmosphere in the room here is quite comforting, with neutral decor and large windows that overlook Ala Moana Boulevard.

Happy-hour cocktails and pupus are reasonably priced, with most items around $5. My favorites include the specialty martinis and mojitos, Kobe Meatloaf Sliders, and the Red King Crab and Artichoke Dip. If you are really hungry, order the Classic Sampler with roasted tiger prawns, teriyaki tenderloins and the popular crab and artichoke dip. The bartenders here serve up tasty and strong cocktails as well as a nice collection of draft beers that are sure not to disappoint.

Kincaid's is an all-around great pau hana pick with no frills—just good drinks, great bartenders, delicious pupus and friendly service. Happy hour gets started at 3 p.m. daily, but the lounge area in the restaurant generally fills up by 5 p.m., so be sure to arrive early to avoid an extended wait for seating.
