Gallery opens in Haleiwa

Haleiwa Town Center is home to the new thomadro Art Gallery, featuring the works of both local and mainland artists. The gallery will host a grand opening 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday with music, pupus and drinks.

Works on exhibit include oils and high-tech metal paintings to surf photography, ceramics, bronze sculptures and carved glass.

» Maui's art community and those lucky enough to visit this weekend can attend the Art Maui Symposium, where a panel of fine artists will share their stories of how and why they built careers in visual art.

Included in the lineup are jeweler J.B. Rea, wood artist Tom Calhoun, textile and fiber artist Claudia Coonan, glass artists from the Worcester Glass Works and ceramist Tom Fraught.

The talk runs 2 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center's Haynes conference room.

The 32nd annual Art Maui Exhibition will run March 7 to April 2 at the center.

» See what the teachers of tomorrow's artists are doing at the KCC Art Faculty 2010 Biennial, showing at Kapiolani Community College's Koa Gallery.

More than 20 working and teaching artists contribute paintings, drawings, ceramics, sculpture, photography, design, digital prints, animation and mixed-media works.
