Fa'asoa sisters help Kaimuki blow past Leilehua

By

POSTED: Friday, January 22, 2010

Early in the fourth quarter of yesterday's Oahu Interscholastic Association White girls basketball showdown between Kaimuki and Leilehua, Letishah Fa'asoa dribbled across midcourt and stumbled over her own feet as she tried to stop quickly. She backpedaled and flailed at the ball, and as the Kaimuki point guard regained her footing and secured her dribble, coach Mona Fa'asoa leapt off the bench and called a hasty timeout.

As the teams walked to the sidelines, Letishah Fa'asoa walked over to her mother/coach and gave her a big bear hug as if to say, “;Don't worry, Mom. We've got this.”;

The embrace brought a wide smile to Mona Fa'asoa's face. And, sure enough, the Bulldogs, led by the backcourt of Letishah and Dejah Fa'asoa, closed out visiting Leilehua for a 44-30 victory.

Sophomore guard Dejah Fa'asoa finished with a game-high 19 points. She outscored the entire Mules team 9-7 in the first quarter. She hit four 3-pointers out of five attempts from behind the arc, and also hit all five of her free-throw attempts.

“;(She's an) excellent player,”; Leilehua coach Elroy Dumlao said. “;She plays two sides of the court. She plays defense. She's a leader. She can shoot the rock. You've got to know always where she is on the court.

“;We didn't identify her at the early shot. She hit some big shots, and they made that run on us. She's a great player. That's why she's got my vote for player of the year.”;

Letishah Fa'asoa's shot wasn't falling and she scored only four points, but her steady point-guard play and scrappy defense contributed to the double-digit win.
