Several members of the Hawaii Air National Guard deployed in Iraq are asking Hawaii residents to send them new or slightly used soccer balls for Iraqi children in “;Operation Soccer Ball.”;

They have joined a new foundation in northern Iraq that hopes to have a positive impact on kids beyond soccer fields, said Master Sgt. William Chang, of Makakilo, a member of the 297th Air Traffic Control Squadron based at Kalaeloa.

“;We just want to make an impression on these children that the U.S. soldiers are here to help them. ... Even with the barriers of language, anyone can play the game of soccer together,”; he said. “;By the donating of soccer balls, we are giving the children the tools that might one day help them make their lifetime dream come true. ... Playing soccer can give these children lasting memories of joy and laughter.”;

No monetary donations are being accepted; deflating the balls would make shipping less expensive.
