Kamehameha trips up 'Iolani

By

POSTED: Wednesday, January 13, 2010

One man can, indeed, make a difference.

Micah Christenson amassed 19 points and 20 rebounds, including a final board that sealed a 49-47 victory for Kamehameha over 'Iolani last night at the Raiders' gym.

Kamehameha (12-3) improved to 2-1 in the treacherous waters of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu, while 'Iolani slipped to 2-1 (9-6). The Warriors dominated the boards with a 33-16 edge.

“;It feels great beating 'Iolani at 'Iolani, in a hostile environment. We haven't done that in a long time,”; Christenson said.

The last time the teams met was in the final of Moanalua's Na Menehune Holiday Classic. With Christenson gone on a volleyball trip, 'Iolani won 57-46.

This time, the home team rallied from a 42-32 deficit and got within 47-46 on a backdoor layup for a three-point play by Kainoa Chu with 1:25 remaining.

With 'Iolani's faithful chanting “;De-fense”;, Christenson hit the biggest shot of the night, a step-back 17-footer from the baseline, to give Kamehameha a 49-46 cushion with 1:04 left.

'Iolani's Jarrett Arakawa missed a trey from the left wing, but Kamehameha sophomore Dyrbe Enos missed the front end of a one-and-one with 35 seconds to go.

Kamehameha went back to a 2-3 zone for the final seconds. Chu missed a 3-point leaner that went in and out, but the Raiders got the ball back with 12 seconds remaining.

They swung the ball from Arakawa to Chu to reserve Jourdan Simmonds to Andrew Skalman in the corner, and Skalman was fouled on his 3-point try by Charlton Tang with eight-tenths of a second to play.

Skalman missed the first foul shot and made the second to bring 'Iolani within 49-47. He deliberately missed the third foul shot, but Christenson hauled down the rebound with both hands to end the game.

“;It was about us not getting stops. Micah's really, really good. We got outboarded really bad, and they outscrapped us,”; 'Iolani coach Dean Shimamoto said. “;Offensively, we were OK. Our first line of defense was good, but our second line wasn't.”;

Tang, a 6-foot-2 junior, was a key factor with 14 points on 6-for-9 shooting for No. 3 Kamehameha.

“;He's learning his role. Hustle plays, clean-up plays and he runs the floor pretty good,”; Kamehameha coach Jesse Nakanishi said. “;I'm proud of him.”;
